What is ABC Music & Me School Edition

ABC Music & Me is a Research-Based Curriculum, focusing on early literacy and language development. It uses music to improve multiple areas of a child's development. This program specifically helps develop confidence, coordination, creativity, self-control, and vocal expression. Through our amazing professional development, your teachers are trained on how to implement and run this program in their individual classrooms! They are given the tools they need to do this as many times a week as they want!

In every unit of ABC Music & Me, children hear stories, read aloud and sing songs that include new vocabulary words. Stories are accompanied by illustrations. Research supports these practices as effective sources of implicit vocabulary acquisition. Many educational researchers promote music as a way to enhance vocabulary acquisition and comprehension, and emphasize music’s ability to engage children in instruction. (Fountas & Pinnell, 1999; Miller & Coen, 1994; Page, 1995; Smith 2000; Wiggins, 2007)

In addition to the Teacher Guides containing lessons plans for early childhood classrooms, ABC Music & Me includes a special guide specifically addressing children whose second language is English. This guide includes information about how to use music in an inclusive classroom, and how to adapt the activities in the ABC Music & Me curriculum for even greater success with these children.

ABC Music & Me also gives families compelling tools to engage parents and caregivers in building children’s early language and literacy as recommended by researchers. Resources for each child include a monthly magazine with fun and literacy-based activities and a story for reading aloud at home, and audio CD filled with multicultural songs and listening activities. Every other month an instrument is included for the families to keep. Home resources are available in Spanish to engage families who speak Spanish as a home language.
